Riddle: A hall for one, some, and all.

The project is to design a hall for the Department of Architecture community at MIT. The location of the hall will be what is currently known as the Long Lounge. It begins with short observation sketches. Subdivision and oblique are the selected topics to explore in this exercise.

The Two-Cut Hall consist of 3 volume/void, 1. medium size room for (some) architectural design review ; 2. big room with two oblique surface and flapping steps for (all) lecture, larger review amd events : 3. small compartment for (one) study and reading.

//Subdivision

A series of massing models is produced. The wood volume (scaled down from the long lounge) is cut obliquely in multiple combinations and directions. The cut is hard to describe and thought through in 2D representation. Therefore, physically cutting the volume is the essential step for the project to explore the solid/void relationship.

The decision is to make the oblique (-20° bandsaw bed) “Y” cut (2 cuts) to form 3 volumes - for one, some, and all (defined by top planes of two smaller volumes).

//Oblique

This project is trying to explore the potential of oblique, and how human could interaction with the oblique surfaces.

Oblique is a relative concept which means a horizontal surface is needed to define the oblique one. The game of flat and oblique has driven the project and the 3 subdivided volumes, giving the space a new characteristic and experiences.
